John Sheppard is one of the military's top pilots. you name it and he’s flown it. However after disobeying an order in the effort to save lives, his military career hit bottom. While serving as a pilot for a military installation in Antarctica, he learned that he posses the rare Ancient gene needed to mentally interact with Ancient technology. He was recruited to join the Atlantis expedition. On their first off world mission from Atlantis, Sheppard's commanding officer was killed by the Wraith and he assumed command of all military forces.
