Inuyasha and his group of travlers are the main charecters of the story. They are united in their pursuit of the Shikon Jewel fragments and in stopping Naraku.

Inuyasha, the informal leader of the group, Inuyasha is a half dog demon. Orphaned at an early age, He grew up shunned and hunted by both sides. He knew he had to get strong enough to defend himself and he did just that. His first encounter with the Shikon Jewel came when he met Kikyo, the woman he would fall in love with. However, fate and Naraku had other ideas. He tricked the two young lovers into betraying each other and in Kikyo's last action before she died was to seal Inuyasha to a tree for 50 years when he attempted to steal the jewel. He was awoken from his slumber by Kagome and together, the two started their journey to take back the Jewel
Kagome is your normal teenage girl from Tokyo. Normal if you don't take into account that she travels 500 years to the past that is. One minuet she was chasing her cat into the old well house, the next she was in feudal Japan. There she encountered the sleeping Inuyasha and awoke him to save her from another demon. The meeting wasn't good however as Inuyasha mistook Kagome for Kikyo and tried to kill her. Luckily the village priestess Kaede had a subduing spell at the ready. She found she was in fact Kikyo's reincarnation and had spiritual powers the same as her ancestor. When a crow demon tried to steal the Jewel, Kagome shot the demon with an arrow laced with purification energy. Unfortunately the arrow hit the jewel and shattered it, thus starting the journey to find the shards.
Shippo joined the two travelers after he tried to steal the fragments from Kagome. The young fox demon needed the jewel's powers to avenge his father’s death. Two upstart demons, the Thunder Brothers, had killed his father and wore his pelt as a trophy. Inuyasha, though annoyed at the small kits antics, took pity and fought the brothers for Shippo. After they were defeated, the kit stuck to them since he was all alone. He often vies for Kagome's attention and likes to get Inuyasha in trouble, but his trickery, illusionary powers, and loyalty to his new friends have benefited the group multiple times.
Miroku met the group in an out of the way village, searching for shards of the jewel. His motivation for finding the fragments was a little different though. Unlike the rest, Miroku had knowledge of Naraku, and shed light on his existence to the rest. His grandfather was tricked by Naraku and given a curse, a wind tunnel, a void of nothingness in the palm of his hand. While a beneficial weapon, the curse spreads and eventually will suck its owner into it. A very painful death. The curse was passed down to his father, and then finally to him. He tries not to let it get him down however, and even though a monk, he is quite the ladies man. When he spots a pretty girl, he will pop his favorite question. Excuse me miss, will you do me the honor of bearing my child? A question that has gotten him beat by Sango many times after she joined the group.
Sango comes from a family of demon exterminators. Her family was hired to clear a castle of a nasty demon. However, the owner of the castle was Naraku in disguise. He took control of Sango's brother, Kohaku, and had him slay all the exterminators except Sango. While this was going on, Naraku sent a group of demons to slaughter their village. When all was said and done, Sango was tricked into thinking Inuyasha was her enemy. She tried to kill Inuyasha but he and the rest were able to show Sango the truth behind the deaths. Sango joined the group in order to get revenge on Naraku, and to get her brother back from the demon.
